Cabinets are in

Cabinets were hung and hardware on in a day. Everything looks as we hoped here. Maybe the grain of the oak in the 2nd and 3rd bathrooms was a little heavier than expected, but we weren’t up for the upgrade price. I’m sure in another 10 years or so oak will be back in style anyway!

Siding on, Locked down

We’ve been waiting to see the siding for a long time, and now that it’s on we can see the finish line.

Now that the trim and doors and such are being installed, they’ve got the doors and windows locked for real.

Wider perspective

Just before the drywall I blew the dust off the SLR to take some wide-angle photos of the inside.

Drywall was hung in one day, and at this rate will be done by the end of the week.

The second week included mostly electrical and a few odds and ends like the fireplace and sealing up air leaks.

Roof, wrap, windows, doors

All dried in after just three weeks.

The roof is pretty low pitch, allowing the roofers to really get after it. With nail guns on Full Auto, I seriously think they were done in half a day. Wish they would slow down a bit honestly.

How to get a roof (in 4 hours or less)

The windows and doors were set in a day. Vinyl windows and fiberglass door, to be painted last.

Rear wrap, windows, doors

Funny, they can build a whole house level in a day, but this porch roof took them that long as well. They did a nice job.

Framing the first floor

Finally, the fun begins! On the first day of framing, my true love gave to me, a decked first floor platform and 2 partially-built exterior walls.

See the crew here setting the engineered wood I-Joists (BCI 6000) into place over the central steel beam.

Setting the floor joists

In the basement, you can see a little bit of water remaining, where earlier in the morning the crew was sloshing around in water. Either they pumped it which I don’t think or the concrete is still drawing the water down.

The wood tower they constructed to set the steel beam in place by hand (without a crane).

Concrete #3

The third and final stage for concrete is the slab floor. The work was done February 27, a nice day by winter standards. The concrete was pumped through a hose, without the use of a boom due to the trees overhead and elevation from the street.

Pouring the slab

The man in the blue shirt and hard hat was clearly “the man”, doing apparently all the parts requiring the most skill.

Over the two days following the pour we had about an inch of rain, which at the time was a little worrisome just because I thought it would have to be pumped out.

The largest rain gauge we'll ever own

As it turned out, the water disappeared rather quickly, I believe mostly due to absorption by the curing cement.
