Cayce's Summer Visit 2003

The first part of the Little Devil's Stairs trail runs from a small parking lot off an unpaved back-road just outside the park and runs for approximately 2 miles, the second of which is a steep, rocky ascent up the Keyser Run and canyon. After an elevation gain of 1500 feet, the second part of the trail begins at a junction with the Keyser Run Fire Road, which leads 3.5 miles back to the parking.

Little Devil's Stairs

The creek (run) here ran in a sheet down a series of large smooth stones
Cayce reads the trail book in front of a dramatic talus slope. Talus is the collection of fallen or eroded rocks at the bottom of or along a slope.
I don't get any credit, in this photo, for climbing out a bit onto a fallen tree across the run... I ventured out further in order to take the next couple of shots.
This trail was a blast, parts of it involved climbing up through slices of the creek, as shown here...
... and here
The only decent shot of the canyon walls. Gives you a sense of the age of these mountains to realize this creek cut this canyon
One of the many, many creek crossings. The only trick is avoiding slippery and/or unstable rocks.
A 1/2 mile section of the trail from the canyon to the fire road was through quiet, dense growth. We didn't see another person the whole day. The blue blaze on the tree demonstrates the way trails are marked. (Yes, that's where "blaze a trail" comes from!)

Afterwards, not much worse for wear (in the picture at least)
