wake up for our 3rd day of travel!

We had breakfast at the hotel and enjoyed a conversation with an English man on business. He told us that most of the visitors this time of year are British vacationers, with the American and foreign tourists coming later in the summer.

Time to hit the road, we are headed for the Isle of Skye today.

Well, the ferry didn't come, and we decided to backtrack a hour or so and cross to Skye over the Skye Bride at Kyle of Localsh. On the way back, we saw a sign that says the ferry opens at Easter, which is late this year. Oh well. Now we are approaching Skye from the other direction.

Arrive at town of Portree, in the center of Skye.
1230 |
Leaving Portree, after lunch and a shopping trip for a hair dryer for Holly. Her's burned up the first night when the voltage converter apparantly didn't completely work.
1250 |
On A855 - North of Portree. The road from Portree quickly becomes desolate and in fact we thought we had taken a wrong turn. But we pressed on and soon found this landmark that was on the map!
1300 |
This is close to the Old Man of Storr, the landmark we found. The picture we took didn't come out, but it is a column of rock that didn't erode with the surrounding rock.
1315 |
Scenic spot at the mouth of a river along the coast.
1330 |
Another formation called Kilt Rock, named for the folds of rock on a cliff by the sea. The cooling of molten volcanic rock formed vertical columns in a hexagonal or octagonal pattern. Erosion then exposed these columns, which now look like the folds of a Kilt. You can almost see that from these pictures though.
1340 |
Staffin Bay - we got to see some sheep dogs herding sheep here!
1400 |
Duntulm Castle ruins

Overlook at Uig

We arrive at Dunvegan Castle and took a fun tour around the grounds and castle.
1608 |
Leaving Dunvegan - we've decided to make our way back down through Skye toward the mainland and then head for the North country.
1632 |
Loch Hanport on A863, Isle of Skye - the sunlight was playing tricks through the clouds onto the island in the foreground

Stopped at the Kyle of Localsh to get some money

Baa, Baa, Black Sheep ....

At the edge of Glen Carron - it's completely deforested here, though not in other parts. We're almost to Achnaseen.
1847 |
We're past Achnasheen, there are tree farms everywhere, lots of Scots pine, of course
1906 |
Loch Glascarnoch and the opposite view - a dam on A835, the road to Ulapool.
1915 |
Past Loch Glascarnoch
1930 |
A highland storm is blowing in from the direction we are headed, dark blue and swirling.
1945 |
We arrive at Ulapool, find the Caledonian Hotel, and get a room for the night.
2045 |
We enjoyed a nasty dinner of takeout from a fish & chips shop where you can smell the grease in the air, but can't get a napkin to wipe your face off. Afterwards, we started to planning the next leg of our journey, and, of course, we watched a little BBC Scotland.
