On our final day, we toured the Emmental and Aarau regions, though not seeing as much as we would have liked. The weather was great and this weekend there was a huge bike festival so our travel path was continuously blocked by all manner of cyclists. It tooks at least an hour to find a way around them, because all the backroads we were traveling were closed. But we got to see the production of Emmental (holey) cheese as well as a castle (from the outside) in Burgdorf and the old city at Aarau. We missed out on several other interesting castles in the area, including Lenzburg, Hapsburg, and Hallwyl mostly because we just ran out of steam.

Burdorf Schloss (castle)

A small house where a cheese maker demonstrated the traditional method. Nobody was here, probably because the place was choked with smoke!

The old town (Altstadt) of Aarau. We came in part to see the old buildings and colorful paintings under the eaves of the buildings.

The buses in these small towns are maddening - constantly passing you as you try to walk around the tiny streets. A constant annoyance.
Old tower, now a museum, near the wall by the river.
